If you were to drive by the Piqua football practice field the past four days, you would have noticed it looked more like a playground then a football field. That's because the Piqua coaching staff was holding their annual Youth Football Camp for first graders through eigth graders.
The stars of tomorrow were on hand and the camp ended up being a big hit for those in attendance as well as those working with the youngsters. The kids received tips from their favorite current Indians and past Indian, Matt Finkes was in attendance, along with the Piqua High School varsity coaching staff.
Piqua head coach Bill Nees was pleased with the attendance of the camp. “The participation each year is great. We have a very supportive group of parents and that helps out a lot. It also helps that the kids are willing to come out here and learn from the guys they come to watch each week,” Nees said.
The camp was broken down over the course of four days with Monday and Tuesday focusing on offense. The kids got to learn the basics of blocking, throwing, receiving and running with the football.
Wednesday and Thursday switched over to the defensive side of the ball. The kids had the oppurtunity to use tackling dummies, run through bag drills and use the skills of the defensive backs.
The camp was a huge success as each kid received a free T-shirt at the end of camp.
