Piqua will kickoff the regular season with Grove City for the 5th straight year. Grove City came away with the victories in 2004, 2002 and 2001. Last year, a young group of Indians got a taste of varsity action during the 35-6 victory for the Hounds.
The Indians will continue the non-league portion of the schedule by traveling to Xenia for a week 2 battle with the Buccaneers. Xenia returns a number of talented players and are looking to battle for the Greater Western Ohio Conference Eastern Division title.
Running back Cameron Campeau and the Fairmont Firebirds will visit Alexander Stadium for a week 3 contest. The Indians are looking for revenge after last year's 26-21 Fairmont victory. The two teams will play for the 41st time with the series all even at 20 wins each.
The Rams of Trotwood-Madison will play host to the Indian Nation in week 4. The Rams will feature several of the top college football prospects in the state of Ohio. The Indians will look to come away with a victory after Trotwood-Madison has taken the last three contests between the two schools.
Springboro comes into the 2005 football season expected by many to be one of the top Division II teams in the state as they return the majority of their starters from a team that reached the state playoffs in 2004. The Panthers invade Alexander Stadium on September 23rd.
Piqua travels south to Centerville in a Greater Western Ohio Conference crossover game. The Elks finished 11-1 last season, falling in the state playoffs to eventual Division I state champion Cincinnati Colerain. The Indians and Elks will be meeting for the first time in history on the gridiron in what many think should be an excellent game, based on the history of each school.
Ohio's oldest running rivalry will continue on October 7th when Piqua invades Troy Memorial Stadium to battle the Trojans for the 121st time. The series is all even, 57-57-6, after Troy defeated the Indians 30-7 in 2004.
Piqua and Northmont will do battle in week 8 in what many are expecting to be the GWOC West championship game. The Bolts feature Ohio State bound Kurt Coleman in the defensive secondary as they look to slow down the Indians offensive attack.
The Indians will wrap up the home portion of the regular season schedule by hosting the Aviators of Vandalia-Butler in Week 9. The Indians defeated the Aviators last season by a score of 28-6 for the Indians first victory of 2004.
Former Indian football coach and athletic director Steve Magoteaux has joined the Sidney coaching staff and will close out the regular season by playing host for the second year in a row to the Indian Nation. The Indians are looking to continue their dominance over the Jackets by attempting to retain the Battered Helmet. The Indians have won 22 of the last 25 games between the two rivals.
Though a brutal schedule lies ahead, the Indians appear to be ready and are looking to return to the glory days of the Piqua program and return to the state playoffs for the first time since 2001.
